If a business wants to generate some buzz about a new product or service, they might offer a coupon or special deal (e.g., “buy one get one free”) for a limited time to encourage prompt action. This is called promotional marketing. A different company might select an attractive and functional tote bag and send it out to a select group of recipients. This is also a form of promotional marketing.

The goal of any promotional marketing campaign is to generate interest and to stand apart from your competitors. The first promotion described above gets the customer in the door to purchase the featured item and see what else you have to offer. The second promotion keeps your business top of mind every time the recipient uses the product.
